São Miguel, the largest island in the Azores, is a paradise for nature lovers and adventure seekers. From volcanic landscapes to lush greenery and crystal-clear waters, this island offers endless opportunities for exploration. Here are seven unforgettable activities to add to your São Miguel itinerary:
1. Go Hiking
São Miguel is a hiker’s dream, with trails that showcase the island’s diverse landscapes. Whether you’re trekking around volcanic craters, wandering through dense forests, or climbing alongside cascading waterfalls, there’s a trail for every skill level.
The island’s well-maintained network of marked trails makes it easy to explore its natural beauty. From beginner-friendly paths to challenging routes, you’ll find plenty of options to suit your pace. Don’t forget to pack comfortable shoes and a camera—every turn offers breathtaking views!

2. Relax in Thermal Hot Springs
São Miguel’s geothermal activity makes it home to some of the most relaxing thermal hot springs in the world. One of the most famous spots is Parque Terra Nostra, where you can soak in warm, mineral-rich waters surrounded by lush botanical gardens.
Pro tip: The minerals in the water can temporarily tint your skin and swimsuit a light orange, so avoid wearing light-colored clothing. Many visitors also choose to stay overnight at the Terra Nostra Garden Hotel for a truly immersive experience.
Whether you visit during the cooler months or just need a relaxing break, the hot springs are a must-visit for their soothing and rejuvenating effects.

3. Go Whale Watching
The Azores is one of the best places in the world for whale and dolphin watching, thanks to its location in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. São Miguel offers numerous tours, especially during the peak season from spring to summer, though marine life can be spotted year-round.
I highly recommend booking a tour with Azores Whale Watching Terra Azul in Vila Franca do Campo. Their smaller boats provide a more intimate experience, allowing you to get up close to these majestic creatures. During my visit in February, we were lucky to see plenty of dolphins, and the views of the island from the sea were stunning.
A word of caution: The seas can be rough, so it’s best to avoid a heavy breakfast before your tour. Even if you don’t spot whales, the experience of being out on the open ocean is unforgettable.

4. Visit the Scenic Viewpoints
São Miguel is dotted with Miradouros (viewpoints) that offer some of the most spectacular vistas you’ll ever see. These well-maintained spots are perfect for soaking in the island’s natural beauty, from rolling hills and volcanic craters to dramatic coastlines.
Some of my favorite viewpoints include:
- Ponta do Sossego
- Ponta da Madrugada
- Por-do-Sol
- Salto da Farinha
- Pico do Ferro
As you drive around the island, keep an eye out for the “Miradouros” signs—each one is worth a stop.

5. Chase Waterfalls
São Miguel is home to some of the most stunning waterfalls in the Azores. Whether you’re hiking to hidden cascades or admiring towering falls, these natural wonders are a must-see.
Some of the best waterfalls to visit include:
- Salto do Cagarrão
- Cascata do Salto do Prego
- Cascata da Ribiera dos Caldeirões
While the water flow varies depending on the season, the waterfalls are always impressive. If you’re visiting in the warmer months, don’t miss the chance to take a refreshing dip in the pools below!

6. Sip Tea at a Local Plantation
Did you know the Azores is the only region in Europe that grows tea? A visit to one of São Miguel’s tea plantations is a unique and relaxing experience.
I recommend Cha Porto Formoso, a charming plantation that specializes in black tea. After a short guided tour, you can enjoy a cup of freshly brewed tea in their cozy tea room and explore the picturesque grounds. It’s a peaceful way to spend an afternoon and a great opportunity to pick up some local tea to take home.

7. Explore Ponta Delgada
No trip to São Miguel is complete without a visit to Ponta Delgada, the island’s capital. This charming city is known for its beautiful architecture, cobblestone streets, and vibrant waterfront.
Spend a few hours wandering through the historic downtown area, where you’ll find picturesque squares, stunning churches, and cozy cafés. Grab a coffee and a pastry, soak in the relaxed atmosphere, and enjoy the blend of Portuguese culture and island charm.
While Ponta Delgada is small, it’s a perfect place to unwind and experience the local way of life.
