5 Days on São Miguel Island: Azores, Portugal Travel Guide

If you ever get the chance to visit the Azores, don’t hesitate—just book the flight. I had the opportunity to explore São Miguel, the largest island in the archipelago, and it was nothing short of breathtaking. From its stunning natural landscapes and lush greenery to its mouthwatering cuisine and warm, welcoming locals, São Miguel is a destination that truly has it all. Despite being the biggest island in the Azores, it’s still compact enough to explore thoroughly in just a few days.

Whether you’re an adventurer who loves a fast-paced itinerary or someone who prefers to take things slow and soak in the scenery, São Miguel caters to all travel styles. For me, five days was the perfect amount of time to experience the island’s highlights while still leaving room for relaxation.

To get there, I embarked on a road trip from Nashville to Buffalo (where I stopped at Anchor Bar, the birthplace of Buffalo wings!) and then flew out of Toronto. Below, I’ve shared some pre-trip tips and a detailed day-by-day guide to help you plan your own unforgettable journey to São Miguel.

Pre-Trip Tips

  1. Exchange Currency: While many places accept cards, having some euros on hand will make your life easier, especially at local shops and smaller restaurants.
  2. Rent a Car: Public transportation is limited, so renting a car is the best way to explore the island at your own pace.
  3. Download Google Maps Offline: This is a lifesaver if you don’t have international data. You can save all your desired locations and navigate seamlessly.
  4. Check Opening Hours: Some attractions open early or close later than expected. Planning around these times helps you avoid crowds.
  5. Be Flexible: The weather in the Azores can change rapidly, so it’s best to have a general plan rather than a rigid schedule. This way, you can adjust based on the conditions and make the most of each day.

Day 1: Sete Cidades, Ponta Ferraria & Pineapple Plantation
Start your adventure in Ponta Delgada and head to Miradouro da Boca do Inferno, a jaw-dropping viewpoint overlooking the iconic twin lakes of Sete Cidades. On the way, make a quick stop at the Abandoned Hotel for a eerie yet fascinating photo op.

After soaking in the views, drive down into the town of Sete Cidades. Don’t miss the bridge between the two lakes—on a clear day, you’ll notice the lakes appear in different shades of blue and green. Explore the charming Igreja de São Nicolau, a picturesque white church surrounded by lush greenery, and grab a bite at Restaurante São Nicolau.

Next, head to Ponta Ferraria, a unique coastal area with black volcanic rocks and natural hot springs. If the conditions are right, you can even take a dip in the warm ocean pools.

End your day with a visit to Pineapples A Arruda, a pineapple plantation where you can learn about the growing process and sample their sweet pineapple liqueur.

Day 2: Lagoa do Fogo, Vila Franca do Campo & Ponta Delgada

Kick off your second day with a trip to Lagoa do Fogo, a stunning crater lake surrounded by lush mountains. The hike down to the lake is steep but rewarding, offering incredible views and a serene atmosphere.

Afterward, make your way to Vila Franca do Campo to see the famous Islet of Vila Franca do Campo, a small, picturesque island just off the coast. If you’re visiting during the right season, you can take a ferry to explore it up close.

In the afternoon, return to Ponta Delgada to explore the city’s historic charm. Wander through Park Jardim António Borges, a lush botanical garden, and visit landmarks like Forte de São BrásPortas da Cidade, and Igreja Matriz de São Sebastião. Don’t forget to try the local “meat plate,” a hearty dish served with rice, fries, and a fried egg on top.

Day 3: Furnas, Beach & Gorreana Tea Plantation

Start your day early in Furnas, where you can relax in the thermal pools at Poça da Dona Beija. Arrive early to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere before the crowds arrive.

Next, visit Terra Nostra Park, a sprawling botanical garden with a massive thermal pool at its center. The water may look muddy, but it’s incredibly soothing. Spend some time exploring the park’s lush gardens, ponds, and hidden pathways.

For lunch, try the famous cozido das Furnas, a traditional stew cooked underground using volcanic heat. Afterward, head to the Gorreana Tea Plantation, the oldest tea plantation in Europe. Stroll through the terraced fields and enjoy a cup of freshly brewed tea as you take in the scenic views.

Day 4: Nordeste, East Coast & Quinta da Jardinete

Day four is all about exploring the lesser-known gems of São Miguel. Start with a drive along the Nordeste and East Coast, stopping at viewpoints like Miradouro da Ponta do Sossego and Miradouro da Ponta do Arnel.

On your final day, take it easy and reflect on your trip. Enjoy a leisurely breakfast at Sunset Beach Restaurante and Bar, where you can savor fresh orange juice and ocean views. If time allows, take a scenic drive or visit any spots you may have missed.
